In a significant shift in the Middle East conflict, President Donald Trump has announced a pause on potential U.S. strikes against Iran’s power plants and energy infrastructure. The five-day reprieve comes as the President signals a strong desire to pursue a diplomatic path instead.

Speaking to CNBC’s Joe Kernen on Monday morning, President Trump stated, “we are very intent on making a deal with Iran.” This follows a series of intense discussions, which the President described on his Truth Social platform as “VERY GOOD AND PRODUCTIVE CONVERSATIONS REGARDING A COMPLETE AND TOTAL RESOLUTION OF OUR HOSTILITIES IN THE MIDDLE EAST.”

The background to this diplomatic push is a tense standoff. The U.S. and Israel had launched airstrikes on Iran on February 28, and in retaliation, Iran began targeting ships in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical passage for about 20% of the world’s oil supply. This had virtually halted shipping through the strait and created what the International Energy Agency calls the largest supply disruption in oil market history.

Update:Iran Denies Trump Talks, Threatens to “Completely Close” Hormuz Strait Amid War

Just days before, President Trump had issued a 48-hour ultimatum for Iran to reopen the waterway, threatening strikes on its power plants if it did not. Now, those strikes are on hold.

However, the path forward isn’t entirely clear. Iranian state media, citing a senior security official, denied that any direct or indirect talks have taken place, calling the U.S. statements “psychological warfare.” This contradiction highlights the fragile nature of the situation.

The market reacted swiftly to the news of a potential de-escalation. U.S. stock futures rallied, the dollar fell, and most notably, oil prices tumbled as fears of a broader conflict that could choke off global supplies began to ease.

While the pause is only for five days, President Trump’s language suggests a broader goal. He described the situation as potential “regime change” and remains hopeful for a substantive agreement. The coming days will be critical to see if this pause in military action can indeed lead to a lasting resolution.
